Retirement Eligibility & Planning Resources

Wespath resources outline retirement eligibility—such as early retirement (age 62 or 30 years of service) and Twenty-Year Rule protocols—and summarize how plans like MPP & CRSP distribute benefits and required minimum distributions.

Mandatory Retirement & Retirement Request Process

In accordance with the Book of Discipline, ¶ 358, clergy in the Horizon Texas Conference are subject to a mandatory retirement age of 72. Clergy anticipating retirement are expected to submit a written request for retirement at least 120 days prior to their anticipated retirement date. This request must be submitted to the Bishop, Cabinet and Board of Ordained Ministry. This advance notice allows for appropriate discernment, consultation, and appointment planning, and ensures a smooth transition for the clergy member, the local church, and the conference. Clergy are encouraged to begin conversations early with their District Superintendent and the Conference Benefits Administrator to coordinate pension, health and transitional planning.
