Archives & History

Our story is our strength. The Commission on Archives & History preserves the vital legacy of the United Methodist communities within the Horizon Texas Conference. Through preservation, storytelling, and digital innovation, we honor the past and empower future generations to carry forward our shared heritage in faith.

Calvin Scott

IT Analyst and Archivist

Under the care of Archivist Calvin Scott and the Commission on Archives & History, our archives unite records from the historic North, Central, and Northwest Texas Conferences—whether in print or digital form.

Conference Archives

The Horizon Texas Conference has established a new archival collection while at the same time maintaining the legacy archival collections. The Horizon Texas Conference, North Texas Conference and Central Texas Conference collections—including journals, committee minutes, and more—are being unified into ArchivesSpace an archival management system. The archives are physically housed at:

  • Horizon Texas Conference Archives – 2201 E. Park Row, Arlington (open by appointment)
  • Central Texas Archives – 2201 E. Park Row, Arlington (open by appointment)
  • North Texas Conference Archives – Bridwell Library at Perkins, SMU
  • Northwest Texas Archives – Jay-Rollins Library at McMurry University

Commission & Leadership Structure

The Commission on Archives & History fulfills a Book of Discipline requirement (¶ 641), functioning under the Tell Our Story Team. Calvin Scott serves as archivist, with Cindy Martin as Committee Chair, focusing on strategy and continuity.

Digital Access & Database Launch

In alignment with modern archival standards, an ArchivesSpace catalog is being developed for public finding guides and remote access. Digitization of legacy journals and key records is also underway.

Local Church Historian Training

Building on legacy best practices, we continue training local church historians on preserving records, storytelling, and archiving oral histories.
